Plants and Seeds


Children will begin the half term covering Division; adding and subtracting one digit and two digit numbers to 20, recalling and using doubles and halves of all numbers to 10 as well as solving one step problems in division.  We will focus on Measurement including length and height / mass and weight. The children will record in both standard (m, cm, g, and kg) and nonstandard units. We will move on to mental addition and subtraction facts in the context of measurement. The focus will be on number bonds within 20 including adding and subtracting 1 and 2 digit numbers to 20. We will revisit fractions including whole, halves and quarters of a shape, object or quantities, before moving on to position, direction and time.   The children will focus on half, quarter and three quarter turns and revisit time by telling the time to the hour and half past the hour.  The children will draw the hands on the clocks to show these times. This will progress to measurement of time where the children will be encouraged to think about the sequencing of events linking to stories such as ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’. Children will finally have the opportunity to compare, describe and solve practical problems for time (quicker, slower, earlier, and later).


This half term the children will focus on Fantasy stories. We will be reading a number of fantasy stories such as ‘Man on the Moon’, ‘Here come the Aliens’  ‘Mungo and the spiders from space’ and ‘Whatever Next’. We will also be exploring film clips and making predictions. The children will be able to predict possible events in a narrative based on their experiences of other texts.  They will be able to re-tell a fantasy story and ask and answer questions about it, discuss main characters and events; identify key events and create a plot pattern. We will then progress to creating our own story maps / mountains / plans with the events in order; respond in role as a character and discuss characters and character’s feelings.  The children will be encouraged to orally retell their innovated story. They will then progress to creating their own short narrative based on a story plan using focus skills and text features.

We will then move on to exploring ‘Traditional Rhymes’ the children will be taught the poems that have been handed down from parents to their children over many years. We will focus on traditional rhymes such as ‘London’s Burning’, ‘Oranges and Lemons’, ‘Row row row your boat ’and ‘Ring a ring of roses’. We will also be exploring the meaning behind the different traditional rhymes. 

Science – Plants.

This half term we will be exploring the topic of ‘Plants’. The children will be able to identify and name a variety of common plants, including garden plants, wild plants and trees, and those classified as deciduous and evergreen. The children will also be able to identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including roots, stem / trunk, leaves and flowers.  The children will be encouraged to work scientifically by thinking about where the most plants grow in the school grounds. As well as exploring if all plants have roots, stem / trunk, leaves and flowers. We will also continue to look at our Seasons unit and explore Spring.

RE –

This unit will begin by looking at Easter – New life and changes. We will begin by exploring spring and discussing new life and then we will move on to reading the Easter Story both from the Bible and story books.  We will compare the story with new life at spring time.  We will look at how Jesus died as well as the feelings of those around him. We will make links with the resurrection and new life cycles.  Linking to our topic we will focus on planting seeds and discussing new life.

Geography - Weather

This half term we will be looking at ‘Weather and weather patterns’. We will begin by naming the four seasons in sequence that occur in the UK, identify seasonal change by studying information on temperature, rainfall, wind speed and direction and daylight. We will explore if the weather is identical across all parts of the UK. We will research what a weather forecast is and how it can be helpful to us and finally investigate how we can record the weather in our school grounds and if there are differences in different parts of the school grounds.


This half term we will be exploring ‘Rhythm in the way we walk’ and ‘The Banana rap’. This is in the style of ‘Reggae’ and ‘Hip Hop’. The children will have the opportunity to explore; pulse (steady beat), rhythm (long and short sounds), pitch (high and low sounds), tempo (fast and slow), dynamics (loud and quiet), timbre (the character of the sound), texture (layers of sound) and structure – how the sections are ordered. The children will listen and appraise, take part in musical activities and finally perform.   


This half term we will be focusing on Gymnastics. The children will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills including performing basic actions; travelling, rolling, jumping and climbing.  Devise, repeat and perform short sequences, Use the apparatus safely as well as managing space safely and an awareness of others. 

Computing – Digital Literacy

This half term the children will be continuing with Digital Research. They will continue to learn about going online safely and search for information linking to our plants topic. They will understand how to keep information private, create their own work and finally send their own email to communicate with people.

Design and Technology - Food

This half term we will look at exploring ‘Food’. The children will be encouraged to design their own healthy snack for a garden picnic. They will then make the healthy snack and evaluate their creation before being encouraged to make it again and think of ways in which they could improve it.
