Children will begin by covering ‘Labels, lists and captions’ they will begin to identify why they are used in the environment as well as to write their own exciting captions for a Fairy tale character. The children will have the opportunity to create labels and lists for the Fairy tale role play area.
We will then move on to ‘Traditional and Fairy tales’ where the children will have the opportunity to read and tell a range of traditional tales identifying the main events and sequencing in chronological order. The children will focus on characters discussing appearance, behaviour and characteristics and finally creating a profile of a character using visual and written texts. The children will explore different versions of the story and express their opinions. The children will develop an understanding of play scripts and be able to retell the story through role play and the use of puppets. Finally most children will be able to write their own version of a traditional story using a series of completed sentences organised into chronological order.
Our final unit in the autumn term will be poems on a theme, the children will hear, read and respond to a range of simple poems with a similar theme. They will have the opportunity to talk about their favourite words and parts of the poems, and notice the poems' patterns. They will be encouraged to identify similarities and differences between the poems.
Children will begin the half term by looking at Number and place value including reading and writing numbers from 1-20, and identifying one more and one less. We will also begin to start counting in multiples of twos, fives and tens. The children will have the opportunity to use practical equipment to represent numbers as well as identifying tens and units.
We will then move on to Measurement by comparing, measuring and describing length, height, mass and weight using standard and non –standard units. The children will develop their mathematical language – fewer, more than, less, than, most etc as well learning to read, write and interpret addition + Subtraction - and Equals =
Finally we will cover Addition and Subtraction including solving simple one step problems that involve addition and subtraction and presenting and interpreting data in block diagrams using practical equipment. The different units will be linked where possible to our ‘Fairy tale’ topic providing fun and stimulating Maths lessons for the children.
Science – Materials
Through investigations using a variety of materials the children will be able to distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made. They will be able to identify and name a variety of everyday materials including plastic, glass, wood, metal, rock etc and describe the properties of the materials e.g. bendy, rough, shiny, and soft. The children will be able to compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple properties as well as working scientifically by performing simple tests to explore questions. We will be linking to the Fairy tale topic by finding out what the most waterproof material would be for the 3 little pigs’ roof.
This half term we will be looking at ‘Our school within its locality’ we will begin by exploring our school and grounds using locational and directional language – left, right, forward, backwards. The children will have the opportunity to look at aerial maps of the school as well as visiting the local area and observing the different features e.g. physical and human features. The children will compare their local area to pictures of the local area in the past and identify differences and similarities.
The children will begin the half term by looking at ‘Harvest’. We will explore where our food comes from, including all around the world as well as local producers. We will consider the lives and struggles of people who do not have a good harvest and think about what our response could be to these situations. We will then follow this unit with Non-Christian Faith unit exploring ‘Sukkot’ The Jewish Harvest Festival.
Children will create images of Fairy tale characters using a variety of media e.g. photocopies, material, fabric, crepe paper etc. They can create Fairy tale settings by arranging and gluing materials to different backgrounds. The children will have the opportunity to understand colour, texture and shape.
Computing – Digital Research
This half term the children will begin to learn how to save, store and retrieve work in an appropriate area, use keywords and websites to find out information and answer questions. They will also have the opportunity to use a range of digital devices to capture both still and moving images as well as accessing a range of tools and use with confidence.
The children will be participating in ‘Dance’ as part of our PE unit this half term. This will include exploring, remembering, repeating and linking a range of actions with co-ordination and control as well as learning how to express themselves through Dance.
The children will also explore moving around the hall safely as well as being aware of others.
In music the children will learn to listen to music with understanding and direction, recognise styles of music as well as being able to find, pulse, rhythm and pitch etc. They will begin to learn the correct musical vocabulary, work together in a band/ ensemble and play instrumental parts with increasing confidence and progression.
